Steven Fletcher joins Wolves from Burnley for £6.5m

• Scotland striker signs four-year deal at Wolves
• Steven Fletcher scored eight Premier League goals

Wolverhampton Wanderers have completed the signing of Steven Fletcher from Burnley for a reported £6.5m fee.

The Scotland international scored eight goals in 35 Premier League games for a Burnley side which suffered relegation straight back to the Championship.

The 23-year-old has signed a four-year contract at Molineux, with the option for a fifth year.

Jez Moxey, the Wolves chief executive, said: “We are delighted to complete the signing of Steven Fletcher. He was one of Mick’s [McCarthy] main targets for the summer and – just like last season with Kevin Doyle – we were able to register our interest early and get the deal done.”

Wolves manager Mick McCarthy planning to sign ‘four or five players’

• Wolves must strengthen this summer, says Mick McCarthy
• ‘We made too many signings last year’ he admits

Mick McCarthy is looking to bring in “four or five players” this summer after securing Wolverhampton Wanderers’ place in the Premier League football for another season.

McCarthy brought in nine players after Wolves gained promotion from the Championship last year, but he confirmed more fresh blood is needed to consolidate their place among the elite.

The manager said: “I will be looking to bring in four or five players this summer to improve. We had too many [new signings] last summer really. The good thing, with making sure we are safe with two games left, is that we can start looking now at the players we want to sign. That is a help in terms of the planning and preparing behind the scenes.”

Wolves visit relegated Portsmouth tomorrow and then end the campaign against Sunderland at Molineux, and with prize money increasing by £750,000 with every place a team rises in the Premier League McCarthy is pressing his side to end the season strongly. “There are two games left, we want to finish 14th and one or two places either way could be the difference between getting a player in and not getting a player in,” he said. “The more money you get in will help with strengthening the squad.”

McCarthy confirmed that the on-loan Charleroi midfielder Geoffrey Mujangi Bia will start his first Premier League game of the season at Fratton Park in place of Stephen Ward, who has undergone knee surgery. The captain, Karl Henry, will also be available after completing a three-game ban for his sending-off against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.

Squad sheets: Wolverhampton Wanderers v Crystal Palace

Neil Warnock revealed this week that Mick McCarthy used to clean his boots when the Crystal Palace manager was a player at Barnsley. With Wolves on a goalless three-match losing run and staring down the barrel in the league, McCarthy could be forgiven for looking back at those days spent wire-brushing the clods from sweaty boots with particular fondness. Palace are five matches unbeaten and will fancy their chances. Sylvan Ebanks-Blake – prolific last season, one goal this – will be given a chance to rediscover his form for the hosts. John Ashdown
